Resources for Trans and Questioning People
This page is a starting point. If you are questioning your gender identity, or you feel that you are transgender, you might feel a lot of pressure to figure everything out very quickly. You might also feel pressured to support people around you, and explain things. But it's important to give yourself space to explore your identity, and focus on your own mental health before you try to take on the needs of others. Try browsing this page, engage with some resources, and take your time.
Whilst the internet can be useful, we strongly recommend that you go and get professional support from a therapist who can help you work through your feelings, and give you the space and freedom to explore your gender identity. See your GP or find a health provider on the AusPATH website. If the first therapist isn’t understanding, find another. Your feelings are legitimate, and deserve to be taken seriously.

What Does Being Trans Mean?
A transgender person has a gender (binary or non-binary) that is different to what was presumed for them at birth. "Transgender" is often shortened to "trans" in conversation.
Gender is innate and research suggests a biological basis. Only you know your gender, no one else can work that out for you. Many trans individuals have always known, since their first memories of childhood, that their gender identity is different. For others, it's a longer journey to discovery which may not become apparent until later in life. There are no medical tests to tell if you are transgender. But, if you are questioning your gender, we want to let you know that you don’t have to work this out on your own. It is normal to have doubts and fears.
Not all trans people medically transition. Being a man, or being a woman, looks different for everyone. Identifying a particular way doesn't mean you have to take the same medical steps as someone else, or any medical steps at all. Some trans men take Testosterone to masculinise their bodies, but not all trans men can safely start that kind of therapy, and some trans men simply don't have any interest in that process. Some non-binary people undergo hormone therapies, some do not. Some non-binary people get gender-affirming surgery, some do not.
There are no "rules" for being trans. The only requirement for being trans is that you persistently do not identify as your assigned gender at birth. It is recommended that you work with a therapist to figure out who you are, take your time, and always remember that you dictate your life decisions.
